Adrian Peterson will start the season as Toby Gerhart’s back-up.

The Viking’s training staff has tempered their expectations for Adrian Peterson’s return to the playing field after a destructive MCL/ACL injury.
According to ESPN, Head Coach Leslie Frazier feels that Peterson will return as the RB promised on opening day.
The only hitch is that he will most likely be Toby Gerhart’s number two. This is crushing news for fantasy football players but it should be good news for Minnesota fans.
If we are being honest, 2012 will probably shake out to be the year that the Vikings figure a lot of things out.
They need to see if Christian Ponder can seriously be the man at QB. There are a lot of questions at WR and even though Jerome Simpson is incredibly talented, can he return from his suspension and walk a straight line off-the-field? There are a lot of holes in the secondary as well.
By treating Peterson’s injury with the due diligence that it deserves the Vikings are protecting their long-term investment in him.
Look for him to seep into the lineup in small doses here and there before he reclaims his starting role.
There is no reported timetable but based off the severity of the injury and the date that it happened, a good guess would be either week seven or week eight.
