Our weekly fantasy basketball report is tracking, Luke Ridnour, Kawhi Leonard, Grant Hill, Ben Wallace and more.
Guards:
Must Have: Stability is the name of the game both in deep leagues and long seasons. The Timberwolves Luke Ridnour is not a flashy pick that will take your team over the top. But his predictable 14.4 points and six assists can prove to be a backbone asset for you if he’s still available. Forget the Jose Juan Barea is going to eat up his floor time talk. Pull the trigger and pick him up.
Also of Note: Spurs rookie Kawhi Leonard has shown flashes of greatness here and there. He’s worth putting in your pocket if only to exercise patience in his growth. Trust us on this, Leonard will be a beast and you will be happy to have him in the long run.
Resist: Ronnie Brewer is a Bull and that for some reason sends folks running to the waiver wire when one of them lights up. Don’t do it if you can. Nothing personal against Brewer, this is more about the situation that he is working through. He’s on Band-Aid duty while Luol Deng deals with his wrist issue. What that means for you is this. If your team is getting beat down so bad that you need emergency help, Brewer might be worth a look. Another way to look at it is if your team is getting beat down so bad, you need to think about dealing for long term solutions. Think about it. The season is still young.
Forwards:
Must Have: The Hornets Jason Smith is emerging big time. His match-ups during week six and week seven will tell the tale of whether or not his double digit figures have been something of a fluke. For our money, he will be a long term solution for many, many teams.
Also of Note: I like veteran Grant Hill I always have. But at 39 years old it’s hard to envision a world where his latest run of production will carry itself past another two weeks let alone a deep stretch. Still, he’s Grant Hill, so if he stays hot, he might just be worth it.
Resist: Marvin Williams is the perfect Atlanta Hawk. There are good days, bad days and really, really bad days with him; this said by an Atlanta resident. His minutes have been higher than many in the field but still…wait at least another two weeks before you add him to your roster.
Centers
Must Have: Portland’s Marcus Camby has come up HUGE recently and it does not look like he will be stopping soon as long as he can stay healthy. Marcus got his groove back.
Also of Note: Fantasy sports is about taking calculated risks at the right time. So write down this name: Timofey Mozgov. The Nugget’s “big” is going to be a star as we works his way up the roster. He’s becoming a killer on the boards and the points.
Resist: The time has come to let go of our desire to get sucked in by the Ben Wallace train. With many and I mean many games with zero points generated, it sucks to see the big man fade away like this.
