Historically speaking, Bum Phillips is probably the most adept coach of all-time that never won a Super Bowl. If he’s not in your mind the greatest to never reach the brass ring, then it can’t be argued that he was loved during and after his time as the lead man for the Houston Oilers.
So much so that decades later a New York City production group putting together an opera in his honor. The words opera and Bum Phillips really don’t belong together.
But when you think about a character such as Bum Phillips, you do think about the term larger-than-life.
According to current Houston Texans DC (and Wade’s son) Wade Phillips, this is very real. Wade has been promoting the project on his Twitter account.
According to Wade, Bum’s reaction was “Don’t they know I can’t sing?”
After some digging, we found the video below. The New York group is working diligently to find the capital to put on the production.
The company met with Bum and his family and have gotten their blessing.
I want to see the production notes. Can you imagine how over-the-top it’s going to be to experience some of Bum’s greatest quotes operatically screeched out? “There’s two kinds of coaches, them that’s fired and them that’s gonna be fired!’
Then you know the fire, the smoke and the overly dramatic guy with the cowboy hat on.
The project is legit folks and you can donate to help the production meet its goals. It’s explained in the video below.
If this happens, I’m there.
