BOSTON-After dousing the Hawks thoughts of forcing a Game 7 on their home court, Kevin Garnett responded to another situation at his post-game media conference.
If you will recall Hawks owner Michael Gearon Jr. said that Garnett is “dirtiest guy in the league.”
Those comments proved to be the ultimate locker room bulletin board material as it fueled Garnett’s performance.
“First off, I want to say thank you to the (Hawks) owner for giving me some extra gas tonight,” Garnett said. “My only advice to him is next time he opens his mouth, actually know what he’s talking about — X’s and O’s versus checkbooks and bottom lines.”
“We’re not dirty. You have to understand the word ‘dirty’ in this game is very defined. Going under guys, trying to hurt guys, ill intent — that’s not how we play basketball. We play very, very respectable to the opponent, to the city we’re in. We play with a lot of passion and with force. It’s the playoffs. I haven’t been here trying to hurt anybody and neither have my teammates. I found that comment to be a little rude and out of hand, and I wanted to address it. Just because you got a bunch of money doesn’t mean you can open your mouth.”
As the city of Atlanta prepares to deal with Gearon Jr. in their own manner after he ran the city’s hockey team out of town, there is now ill-will regarding how he handles the Hawks franchise.
The idea that Garnett has now publicly admitted that he was his inspiration for sinking the death blow to the team’s 2011-2012 season will only make this worse.
