INGLEWOOD, Calif.—The past couple of months have been rough for Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol.  As they watch the NBA Finals from anywhere but the court, the duo were losers on the racetrack on Sunday.

They were part owners in the horse Siempre Mio that lost by a nose at the first race at Betfair Hollywood Park according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

Siempre Mio was trained by Doug O’Neill who also looked after I’ll Have Another’s near historic run.

The race was a one-off for the pair as the gelding was claimed by Donkey Island Racing, a group that includes the contract-weary Drew Brees as one of its partners.

Taking the track in the glitzy gold silks that was laced with a Lakers logo, Simepre Mio kept it close in its photo finish loss to the comeback kid Valkyrie Missile.
