NEW YORK- The saga of Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora has been if nothing else…interesting. The 2012 off-season edition has seen him reignite his annual contract dispute with the team, engage in holiday Twitter disses with Philadelphia Eagles RB LeSean McCoy and well… just be Osi.

Today he told the New York Post that he has done what most millionaires do when they can’t get the paper that they want, he fired his representative Tony Agnone.

“It means nothing as far as a new deal but we both decided that a new approach might be necessary at this time,” Umenyiora said via e-mail.

Agnone is no longer the guy sits at the negotiating table for Umenyiora and he has been replaced by the firm of Osi & Umen &Yioara.

Yes folks, he will be representing himself as he stated “I have no plans on hiring a new agent at this time.”

How does Agnone feel about all of this? “I’m stepping aside so the Giants can do the right thing and take care of him,” Agnone also said via e-mail.

That sounds like a bitter concession speech that has played to the Giants advantage. The team and Umenyiora have agreed on undisclosed terms of a new deal according to the Miami Herald.

I’m somewhat surprised that this doesn’t happen more often. From what I’m told, all player contracts are available for reference by other players and their agents.

What’s to stop a player from taking another player’s contract and stating that they want the same deal (only changing the numbers)?

Drew Brees could fire his agent and basically say, I want Tom Brady’s contract. He could take 2% less money, but still net 3% more than Brady by saving on the agent costs.
