ORLANDO- The Magic took a huge step towards stability today when they announced that former point guard Jacque Vaughn will fill its vacant head coach position.
Throughout the process we wanted to find someone who embodied the type of culture that we’re trying to build here. Jacque’s presence, his intelligence level, his commitment to preparation and being detail-oriented in everything that he does impressed us,’’ Rob Hennigan said in a statement.
“He’s committed to player development and I think his communication style is one that will work well with our players.
“With his character and his humility, I think we’ve found someone who is going to represent and lead our team with class and an attention to detail,’’ Hennigan continued. “He’s passionate and purposeful in everything that he does and that really impressed us throughout the process.’’
Vaughn could be a popular pick with the fans seeing that he was worn their colors on the court.
His lack of head coaching experience within the NBA could also be a plus for a team that is looking to start fresh and redefine its identity. As a member of the Spurs staff he was often cited as a positive addition to that successful group.
At 38-years-old, Vaughn is at a relatable age to any player on that roster which can help smooth over any wounds that have been inflicted by their recent drama.
One of those players won’t be Dwight Howard but the rest will be a group of guys that most likely feel overlooked and under-appreciated after making and being competitive in the first round of the2011-2012 NBA post-season.
Even if Howard plays out the last year of his contract, Vaughn’s noted temperament should help assist in what will sincerely be a period-of-transition.
His selection is not a boom or bust for Hennigan but if he doesn’t work out, it will certainly be another strike against him in what has already been a pretty rocky start.
