Philip Humber called pregnant wife after throwing perfect game.

When Philip Humber was finished throwing the 21st perfect game in Major League Baseball history he called his nine month pregnant wife to make sure she didn’t go into labor from all the commotion.
When you look at back at all the pitchers who have thrown a perfect game, not many have been put on waivers by three teams, traded by another and been called a failed prospect. This is a remarkable accomplishment for the New York Mets 2004 number one pick out of Rice.
When he blew out his arm, he became anathema with a long history of Rice pitchers blowing out their arms and it wasn’t long before he was passed around the majors from the Mets to the Twins to the Royals to the A’s and then to the Sox.
It will go down as the greatest game Humber has ever pitched and now improves his lifetime record to 12-10. To coin a football phrase it just goes to show what can happen on any given day in baseball.
While it’s debatable that Brendan Ryan actually swung at the pitch that was about a foot out of the strike zone, what isn’t debatable was the quality of Humber’s slider yesterday. With nine strike outs his slider was moving in and then out of the strike zone at a phenomenal rate.
He only threw 96 pitches, the second most efficient perfect game ever. When you look at the history of perfect games there’s a good mix of so-called “aces” and guys that had great days. It’s more than likely Humber will fall into that category, but for the rest of his life he’ll be the answer to a trivia question. Who threw the 21st perfect game in baseball history? Philip Humber.
