As President its Barack Obama’s duty to protect the people of the United States, and it begins with his own family. In the latest issue of the New Yorker, via cbssports.com, Obama said he wouldn’t allow his son to play football.
“I would not let my son play pro football,” Obama said. This comes just one year after the President said he would have to think about allowing a son, if he had one, to play football.
“I’m a big football fan, but I have to tell you, if I had a son, I’d have to think long and hard before I let him play football.”
The President’s stance is not new and it’s exactly why the NFL is trying to make the game safer and is educating players at every level. Former players like Kurt Warner and Brett Favre have also voiced their concerns over allowing their kids to play the game they enjoyed for so long, so it comes as no surprise that parents are against football. It’s a physical and violent sport that can take its toll on the body, especially at the highest level.
It’s understandable that parents don’t want their kids to be hurt but serious injuries can happen in any sport. Landing the wrong way in basketball or taking a baseball to the head can also cause serious long-term damage as well.
Football has taken major strides in trying to make the game safer but it still doesn’t soothe the concerns of every parent. President Obama is just one of the many parents who wouldn’t allow his son to play America’s favorite sport, and it’s hard to blame him.
