The Bruins were on their way to a sweep in their NHL Eastern Conference semifinals against the New York Rangers after taking what appeared to be a protectable 2-0 lead.

Then came the third period and the Rangers found their heart.

The seeds of life were planted in the second when Carl Hagelin chipped into the Bruins lead by stopping the bleeding with his score.

Derek Stepan got heroic with a goal early into the third and suddenly the Rangers looked up to the task.

In the end, it was Chris Kreider who scored off a tip in overtime that gave the Rangers more air to breathe.

Down 3-1, hope still appears to be all but lost for the Rangers.

Or is it?

New York fans are feeling hopeful that the Bruins will have flashbacks of 2010, when Boston surrendered to the Flyers after being up 3-0

Regardless of the outcome, Nathan Horton’s power play was still something to see.

The Dodgers were down down 5-2 to the Brewers in the 9th when Kemp hit a foul ball directly into Bell’s mask.

Play stopped for a moment to make sure that Bell was alright, but Kemp did not visibly make an attempt to ensure that Bell was not injured like Larry Vanover was earlier this month.

Vanover was hurt in a similar fashion during a Angels/Orioles contest.

Funny thing is that Bell was on that crew as well.

Kemp may have checked in on Bell before play resumed and it was edited out of this sequence.

The Miami Heat and the Indiana Pacers kicked off the Eastern Conference finals with an explosive mix of last second heroics from both clubs.

The difference between George and James is the timing of their respective big moments.

LeBron James capped off his night with a dramatic overtime buzzer-beating layup that pushed the Heat to a 103-102 victory.

Paul George nailed an epic three pointer to tie the game with seven-tenths of a second on the clock during regulation to force OT.

After taking a week off to wait for the Pacers to dust off the New York Knicks, there were concerns that Miami could come into the start of this series cold.

The Heat lost Game 1 of their semi-finals run versus a wounded Chicago Bulls group after sweeping the Bucks in the quarter finals.

That was not the case on Wednesday night.

Lebron James hit a triple double with 30 points, 10 assists and 10 boards.

Dwyane Wade scored 19 points while still recovering from knee issues and Chris Bosh put 17 points into Miami’s championship fund.

For the most part, they were as they say, ‘on point.’

For the Pacers, George delivered 27 points and five rebounds. George was also very effective at the foul line.

Key points to look for when Miami hosts Game 2 on Friday?

Turnovers.

Both sides got sloppy and coughed it up 20 times.

The team that can maintain consistent ball movement will get the next one before the series heads north.

The Pacers could be the team that can take Miami seven intense games.

Tim Duncan scored 17 points and Tony Parker had 15 to push the Spurs past Memphis 93-89 in overtime.

Parker had a career-high 18 assists, which put San Antonio up 2-0 as the series moves to Memphis on Saturday.

Duncan talked to ESPN about Parker’s big night.

“He was unbelievable,” Duncan said. “I know he’s exhausted. We asked a lot of him. He was controlling the ball every time down the floor and he was making every right play there was.

“He was finding people, and people knocked down shots for him.”

The Spurs weak fourth quarter generated only nine points, which allowed Memphis to mount a comeback and snatch back a 13-point deficit.

Duncan says that it was not the ideal situation.

“I hate that we gave up that big of a lead in that situation,” Duncan said. “But we were resilient enough to go to overtime and not let it affect us.”

Duncan came up big in overtime with six crucial points.

Memphis froze in the extra period shooting 0-for-4 from 3-point land.

For Memphis, Mike Conley and Jerryd Bayless scored 18 points and Zach Randolph double-doubled with 15 points and 18 rebounds.

Conley’s jumper with 18.2 seconds left in regulation tied the game 85-85 and sent the game into overtime.

Memphis coach Lionel Hollins discussed not changing the Memphis way.

“We’re who we are and we have to stay who we are, and we have to understand that no matter who’s coming and talking to us, we have to be true to our identity,” Hollins said, “and we can’t go changing and shaving and taking a bath when we haven’t taken one all along.”

Before the night was done, Cabrera took three total balls out of the park.

Cabrera became one of 15 players to hit at least 330 home runs before his 31st birthday.

He analyzed each of the home runs with M Live.

“That first one might be a double (at Comerica Park). The last time I hit it that far (at home), it was out at the warning track,”Cabrera said.

On the second home run, Cabrera noted that it may not have gone out of the park at home.

“I didn’t see it, Cabrera said. “When you hit a ball like that, you don’t want it to get too high because you want an extra-base hit. That’s a double at home.”

On the third one, he felt good about the distance that it traveled.

“The last one would be out at home, too” Cabrera said.

The main thing that any pro is concerned with is that eventual status of the game.

Despite Cabrera’s show of offensive strength, the Tigers lost to the Rangers 11-8.

Rangers manager Ron Washington told ESPN that despite their victory,Cabrera makes him nervous.

“I’ve never seen a guy that puts the bat head on the ball as regular as he does, and on all pitches,”Washington said. “He’s just a tremendous hitter. I’m very happy that he’s headed to the airport.”

Miguel Cabrera was also praised by his skipper Jim Leyland.

“You don’t feel very good when guys hit three home runs and you lose the game,”Leyland said. “Miggy never ceases to amaze you.

After a week that has been rife with rumours of bickering and frustration, the Knicks managed to pull it together to get a 10-point win over the Indiana Pacers to force a sixth game on Saturday in Indiana.

Carmelo Anthony scored 28 points off 28 shots Thursday, pushing  the Eastern Conference semifinals series to a 3-2 tally after the 85-75 win.

Despite Anthony’s solid offensive effort, the Knicks rolled up their sleeves and knuckled up with the Pacers defensively to get it done.

The Knicks forced 19 Pacer turnovers during the contest that saw them take a 12-point lead into the fourth period.

The Knicks role players also got back into the picture.

J.R. Smith and Chris Copeland both scored 13 points off the bench for the Knicks and Raymond Felton had 12.

Paul George produced 23 points for the Pacers to go with six assists and six rebounds.

As he has been prone to do throughout his entire career, Tony Parker shot down the Warriors’ dreams in flames with one deadly shot.

Parker’s backbreaking 3-pointer with 1:15 to play Thursday pushed the  San Antonio Spurs into the Western Conference finals with a 94-82 victory.

The Spurs beat back  the Warriors in six games to set up a war for the conference title with the Memphis Grizzlies.

San Antonio went into the locker room with a seven-point lead at halftime that they held on to with a tight fist.

Golden State, however, battled back within three when Jarrett Jack hit two free throws with 2:20 to play.

Kawhi Leonard responded with a 3-pointer for the Spurs with 2:01 left and Golden State was unable to answer when both Klay Thompson and Stephen Curry missed a 3-point attempt.

The Spurs wore down the shot clock down and Parker ended it by hitting a 3-point shot that  demolished the Warriors hopes for a Game 7.

After the game, Curry and the Warriors thanked the crowd with a touching end-of-the-season ceremony.

The Oklahoma City Thunder and the Miami Heat were supposed to do battle in the vein of the epic sequels that made Ali vs. Frazier so mighty.

How does the saying go?

That is why they play the game.

Kevin Durant achieved the goal of not being second best this season because he won’t even land in fourth place.

That’s a cold-blooded statement to make but it is what it is.

Were the Thunder under-manned in this series against the Memphis Grizzlies?

To a certain degree yes.

But KD was handed more than one opportunity to rise above the abscence of Russell Westbrook and the departed James Harden to get it done.

It was expected.

And he did not make good on his expectations.

Kevin Durant missed a 16-foot jumper to tie it with 6 seconds left.

That shot could have been the turning point for Durant 2.0.

But it wasn’t.

Durant ended up going  5-for-21 shooting, the third-worst performance of his playoff career.

In short, the Thunder are going home because Durant failed to shift into superstar mode.

For the most part, his supporting cast did their job.

Serge Ibaka got 17 points. Reggie Jackson was good for 16. Kevin Martin was good for 10 off the bench.

There were other points chipped in but that is as much as you can expect from those guys.

Kendrick Perkins was awful in his 17 minutes of court time, but beyond that, the Thunder did their collective job.

Durant did not do his.

There will be plenty of time to poke and prod at why the Thunder did not reach the finals.

Wednesday’s game like the others was not a blow out.

The Memphis Grizzlies won 88-84.

But to the victors go the spoils.

There will be plenty of bbq smoking tonight on Beal Street as Memphis is going to the finals for the first time in franchise history.

In true Heat fashion, it was a cast of characters that helped the Big 3 send the Bulls home.

Shane Battier ignited a fourth-quarter comeback Wednesday to seal the 94-91 victory.

The Bulls owned a 10-point lead during the  closing portions of the third period and were in front by eight heading into the final quarter.

Battier then scored eight points during the first 3:30 of the fourth, hitting a pair of 3-pointers and connecting on 2-of-3 free throws.

The understaffed Bulls gave the Heat fits before coming up short.

They missed two chances at overtime when both Nate Robinson and Jimmy Butler failed on 3-point attempts in the closing 15 seconds.

Miami is now waiting for either Indiana or New York in the conference finals.

Indiana owns a 3-1 lead against the Knicks and will try put down New York on Thursday.

James scored 23 points and Dwyane Wade,  who roared back from a knee injury, added 18.

The final score was 103-97 when all was said and done.

Mike Conley pumped in 24 points Monday for Memphis Grizzlies.

Zach Randolph double-doubled with 23 points and 12 rebounds while Marc Gasol added 23 and 11 for the Grizzlies.

Memphis rallied from a 17-point second-quarter deficit to get it done.

They are one win away from the first conference final appearance in franchise history.

Kevin Durant supplied 27 points, seven rebounds and seven assists for the Thunder, who were limited to 33 percent shooting from the field in the second half.

The worst was feared, as rumors of concussion-like symptoms spread without any confirmed results from the Nationals.

The Washington Post’s Adam Kilgore has tweeted that Harper does not have a concussion.

Brassard told Newsday that the team’s fans pushed him to do it.

“The crowd was chanting to shoot the puck,” Brassard said. “I didn’t see myself giving a pass to one of my teammates there. I think I had to shoot it.”

Brassard and goalie Henrik Lundqvist’s 29-stop performance helped the Rangers force a deciding Game 7 over the Washington Capitals.

Washington pulled their goalie in the final minute of the game to add an extra attacker.

The Capitals then went into an offensive hyper drive in which they launched a slew of shots at Lundqvist as the clock winded down.

Lundqvist  stood tall and Monday’s Game 7 will decide the winner of this Eastern Conference series in Washington.

Gasol also added nine rebounds and four assists to his stat column as he helped Memphis assume  home court advantage.

Mike Conley helped with 14 points, seven rebounds and six assists.

Thunder leader Kevin Durant doubled-doubled with 25 points and 11 rebounds.

After the game, Durant told ESPN that he still believes in this group.

“It’s frustrating, but we can’t hang our heads,” Durant said. “We have to keep playing and keep improving. We just have to learn from it. We have to embrace the tough times and get better from it. I believe in my teammates.”

Anthony told ESPN that it was the little things that did them in.

“They outrebounded us, they won the hustle today, the little things,” Anthony said. “It all came down to us not scoring the basketball. We can’t beat anyone scoring 71 points.”

Tony Parker and Tim Duncan combined for 55 points Friday, to lead the veteran Spurs unit to a statement 102-92 win.

San Antonio got on top of the Warriors early and found out why the Denver Nuggets were sent home in the quarterfinals.

The Warriors are a relentless team that has zero quit in them.

The Spurs spent the entire evening fighting back a series of comebacks on the Warriors home court.

The Warriors trailed by only five points with 1:40 to play, but the Spurs closed out the game on a 7-2 run.

Defensively, the Spurs locked down  Golden State’s normally hot shooting tandem of Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson.

Curry and Thompson teamed to make just 13-of-37 field goal attempts. Thompson scored 17 points and Curry had 15.

The Spurs grabbed a 2-1 lead and regained home-court advantage.

Golden State will host Game 4 on Sunday.

Despite the loss, the play of the night came in the form of a huge jam from Andrew Bogut.

Ottawa steamrolled into the conference semifinals with a 6-1 beatdown over Montreal on Thursday.

Despite the bad blood that consistently bubbled over, Montreal was not on Ottawa’s level.

The Canadiens were taken down in five games after being outgunned a cumulative total of 20-9.

Montreal lost its starting goaltender Carey Price and was forced to call upon Peter Budaj to secure their net and he simply was not up to the task.

Ottawa became the first team to advance in the East and did so as the No. 7 seed.

Montreal did not go down without a fight.

Three goals were scored off the power play as Montreal kept sending players to the penalty box.

Before it was over with, gross misconduct penalties were dealt to Conacher and Montreal’s Gabriel Dumont and Michael Bluden.

The Penguins goaltending change helped them secure a 3-2 lead in the Eastern Conference quarterfinal series.

The Islanders went on to net 14 goals in the next three games, leading the Penguins to bring Vokoun off the bench.

Pittsburgh, No. 1 seed in the East, will try to advance to the semifinals on Saturday.

The Islanders will host Game 6.

This was Vokoun’s second playoff shutout, having recorded one with the Nashville Predators in 2004.

Tyler Kennedy, Douglas Murray and Sidney Crosby all scored in the second period during a span of 6:35 and Kris Letang added a third-period goal.

The victory was not as neat as it sounds.

A brawl erupted towards the end that produced game misconduct penalties for Pittsburgh’s Murray and Craig Adams and New York’s Keith Aucoin.

After taking out the Denver Nuggets in the quarterfinals, the basketball world at large has wondered just how far the Warriors can travel on the back of Stephen Curry.

After dropping a heartbreaker in Game 1, the thought became ‘ the Warriors can hang with the Spurs. But can they finish them off?’

Another doubt was erased on Wednesday as the Warriors downed the veterans 100-91.

The good news for the Warriors is that the  crucial daggers did not come off the finger tips of Stephen Curry.

Klay Thompson put on an aerial display hitting 8-of-9 from 3-point range. Thompson double-doubled with 34 total points and 14 rebounds.

His performance helped the Warriors take home court advantage as they host for the next two games on Friday and Sunday.

The Warriors needed a boost from another name besides Curry who scored 22 points.

Thompson has been cold lately and it looks like he found his groove at exactly the right time.

Tim Duncan led the Spurs with 23 points and Tony Parker had 20.

The Heat dished out a lesson of frustration to Bulls center Joakim Noah and Taj Gibson.

Both players were ejected from the game in the fourth after racking up two technical fouls.

The Bulls as a whole were handed six technical fouls overall.

Ray Allen led Miami with 21 points in less than 20 minutes of court time.

Overall, Miami shot 60-percent from the field on their way to tying the series at one game apiece.

LeBron James sat for a large chunk of the game after the Heat pulled away from Bulls.

The margin of victory is not what is on his mind.

“No matter if you win by 20, 30, or one point, it’s a 1-1 series,”  James told ESPN. “They came in and did their job. They got one on our floor and took home court. So, we’ve got to try to go to Chicago and get it back.”

The series rolls to Chicago for the next two games on Friday and Monday.

James  finished with 19 points with nine assists.  Dwyane Wade and Norris Cole both had 15 points for Miami.

The match was a cliffhanger as New York almost pulled off a late comeback,  forcing overtime with a pair of third-period goals from Kyle Okposo and John Tavares.

In the extra frame, New York’s Brian Strait was whistled for a controversial holding call on Pittsburgh captain Sidney Crosby, handing the Penguins a power play.

Crosby explained the situation to ESPN.

“He kind of wrapped me up,” Crosby said. “I pulled up looking for someone. I didn’t see anyone so I thought I would take it to the net.

“We were hoping we could get it done quickly.”

The Penguins held true to their hopes as 33 seconds later, Kunitz converted a close-range shot from the left circle off a feed from Crosby.

The Bulls were driven by center Joakim Noah’s double-double of 24 points and 14 rebounds.

“I’ll remember this for the rest of my life,” Noah told ESPN.

“I’m just so proud of this team. We’ve been fighting through so much all year and to be in this situation, play on the biggest stage in the world and to be able to win and now play against the Heat, all these experiences, I (don’t) take those for granted,” Noah said.

Curry finished with 22 points. Draymond Green added 16 points for Golden State and Andrew Bogut had 14.

Griffin tried to fight through the injury managing only 20 minutes of court time and four total points.

Clippers point guard Chris Paul told ESPN that Griffin did the best that he could.

“It’s tough. BG tried to give it a go, like we all knew he would,” Paul said. “Right now we’re fighting for our lives. It’s a tough blow, but what can you do? We’ve got to find a way to get through it and figure it out. That’s what the playoffs are all about.”

In losing the 103-93 contest, the Clippers are within one game of elimination from championship contention.

Game 6 will be played in Memphis on Friday.

The Celtics pulled out a 97-90 overtime win against the New York Knicks on Sunday to stay alive in their Eastern Conference semifinal series.

Jason Terry was sincerely the hero of the day.

Terry scored nine of his 18 points in OT to pull the Celtics home for the win.

In regulation, big man/leader Kevin Garnett also came up big.

He double-doubled with 13 points, 17 rebounds and six assists.

Had the Celtics lost, they would have been swept 4-0 by the Knicks.

By forcing a Game 5, the Celtics have given the Knicks an opportunity to celebrate a series win on their home court in Madison Square Garden on Wednesday.

I’ll admit that I am one of those people.

On Wednesday the Spurs took a 2-0 lead in their Western Conference quarterfinals series with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Tony Parker had a big night in the 102-91 victory, scoring 28 points.

Parker launched a nice alley-oop to Kawhi Leonard as seen in the video below.

That was the flashiest part of the evening as everything else about the Spurs was very workmanlike.

“I thought we played two pretty good games on the defensive end of the court back to back,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich told ESPN. “That was our goal at the beginning of the season, and we did it for most of the year, as I said, until maybe the last three weeks of the season it dissipated. We got it back for these two games.”

Can they keep it up once they land in Los Angeles for Game 3 on Saturday?

Unless the Lakers make major changes, the answer to that question appears to be yes.

Long story simple, as seen in this video, New York Knicks vet Jason Kidd has a longstanding relationship with Bob Thate, the shooting coach of the Los Angeles Clippers.

That relationship came into play before the teams played on Sunday.

Thate met with Kidd for about 20 minutes to help get him right before the game.

“He helped me out a little bit, what I was doing wrong,” Kidd told the New York Daily News. “I’ve known him for a long time, his family. I’m happy he’s working with the Clippers and Blake (Griffin). He just pointed out a couple of things, just trying to help [me]out.”

Kidd finished with 11 points on 4-for-7 shooting; 3 of which were 3-pointers.

Had the Knicks won, it could have a been a problem as witnessed by Blake Griffin’s reaction to the Thate’s tutoring session at the end of the video.
