After a mini-quarterback’s controversy that didn’t really interest a whole lot of folks outside of Oakland, Terrelle Pryor has won the right to start the Raiders’ final 2012 game against the San Diego Chargers.

Players View has observed Pryor since his high school footage hit the internet and helped turn him into a coveted addition to Ohio State’s roster.

It will take more than one game for Pryor to shake off the talk of his alma matter but Sunday could be a start.

Though his competition was the shaky-at-best Matt Leinart, Pryor did not find out until Friday that he was the guy that was filling in for the injured Carson Palmer.

“I’ve decided to go with Terrelle Pryor as our quarterback,’’ coach Dennis Allen told the Contra Costa Times. “He’ll play in the game and we’ll see how the game goes. He’s the starter, and we’re going to go into it as we would any other game.’’

“I wanted to see how each player responded,’’ Allen said. “I thought Terrelle responded well. I think he gives us a unique element of athleticism at the quarterback position and I think he deserves to get an opportunity to get out there and see what he can do.

“I’m anxious to see him play. I want to see him get out there and relax, play the game of football the way it’s supposed to be played. I want to see him take command of the huddle. I want to see us get in and out of the huddle and the operation be smooth. I want to see him protect the football, make sure he makes good decisions.’’

If Pryor can confidently guide the Raiders past the Chargers, it may ensure that he could be in the mix for the 2013 gig.

Carson Palmer has seen his better days, this much is true.

If Pryor steps out on the ledge and lays an egg then Oakland is once again more or less without hope at quarterback.

1n 2012 Carson Palmer has a completion rate of 60.4 and has thrown 12 interceptions through 11 games.

The most important stat is that as the quarterback of the Oakland Raiders he has led the team to a 3-8 in 2012. Palmer has a 7-14 record overall since he landed with the Raiders in the 2011 season.

There is a case to be made here that Carson Palmer at age 32 is on the downside of what at one point seemed like a stellar career.

After taking a series of four consecutive beat downs, there is a thought process coming out of Oakland that the team may activate former Ohio State standout Terrelle Pryor to see what he can do at the gunslinger position.

Coach Dennis Allen told the Contra Costa Times that he and his staff have “discussed” the possibility.

“He’s working to get better, and he’s working to improve,” Allen said of Pryor. “He’s gotten better as a quarterback. I don’t think any of us feel like he’s the finished product, including himself, but he has worked to improve.”

Pryor could fit into Allen’s commitment to finding away to squeeze something positive out of this season.

“We got to look at any options,” Allen said. “Again, we’re all accountable to getting this thing corrected and getting it done right. Players and coaches, we’ve all got to be held accountable. We’ve got a standard that we uphold ourselves to, and we haven’t lived up to that standard yet.”

You look at what the San Francisco 49ers have done with Colin Kaepernick and you ask yourself ‘can Pryor do that for the Raiders?’

If given the chance and most importantly a true vote of confidence, I’d say that there is a slightly better than average chance that he can do just that.

Until he hit the pro ranks the kid was a winner at every level that he played at.

The Raiders have a host of young and flashy skill players that could probably forge a deeper bond with Pryor than they enjoy with Palmer.

Pryor can ball but the question is has he forgiven himself for what happened at Ohio State?

Something changed him at the outset of that situation and rightfully so.

He deserved to be humbled but did that process strip him of his confidence?

If the Raiders are smart they will find out now since their season is already in the gutter.

If Pryor does well, they can always ship Palmer off to Arizona for some draft picks and move on with the future.

This would be the optimum situation as lord knows the Raiders need to spend as many resources as they can afford to get that defense right.

If Pryor fails, they can cut ties with him and focus their draft strategy around finding the guy that will make the Raiders competitive again.

And then they can start working on their defense.

No matter how you cut it, for Oakland, the future is now.

OAKLAND—Three weeks or so ago, the Raiders front office and coaching staff were making comments that seemed to support the idea that former Ohio State Buckeye Terrelle Pryor would be given the opportunity to sit behind Carson Palmer and prepare for his retirement as his backup.

Then they went and signed former Cardinal/Texan Matt Leinart and all took this as a sign that Pryor either was not living up to expectations or his was a dream deferred.

Getting real, should Matt Leinart’s presence scare anybody? Ask Texans back-up QB T.J Yates if Pryor should bug out.

Yates was handed the reins of the Texans offense after Leinart could not even finish one half of football after he reinjured his collarbone last season.

After the Texans were already down their starter Matt Schaub, Yates went on to take his team to their first post-season berth and win.

In fact, when Leinart signed with the Raiders last week, the most shocking part was that he had not chosen to leave the game for good.

According to Sports Illustrated’s Jim Trotter, Pryor and the Raiders coach Dennis Allen both feel good about his progression and status with the team.

“He certainly has been here and putting in some hours to make sure that he’s getting better,” Allen said recently. “The thing that I’ve been impressed with is, Terrelle is very, very eager to learn. That’s what you look for in a young guy like that.

He’s hungry for it, and he’s working. It’s obvious he’s got great physical talents. I was out there and they were throwing, and just looking at him he’s really impressive. But like any young player he’s got to develop a full understanding of the game, because it’s more complex than it is in college.

The thing that I talk to him about is, don’t worry about anything other than you just working to get better every single day, in the meeting rooms, on the field, everything you do. At the end of the day the results will take care of themselves.”

Oakland Raiders QB Carson Palmer is confidently headed into the 2012 season as the starting quarterback.

Palmer was not the savior that former coach Hue Jackson thought he would be and the Raiders let their playoff hopes fall to their division rivals The Denver Broncos.

With not a lot of time left on the horse, the clock is ticking on the sunset of Palmer’s career and the Raiders have started hinting that they are looking to second year man Terrelle Pryor to see what he can do.

New coach Dennis Allen was somewhat coy when discussing Pryor recently.

“At the end of the day, what I’m looking to see from him, not necessarily this week. It’s the process as we go along. What I want to see is that every day he gets a little bit better. That’s what we’re looking for with all of our players.

None of us are where we need to be right now. Our job is to as the process goes on our job is to put our head down, put blinders on and put one step ahead of the other and take it day by day. I know those are clichés but it really is true.

We’re going to take it day by day and keep getting better every day. At the end of the day if we can do that and get better every day we’re going to like the results at the end.”

That answer was extremely political but Pryor definitely has the opportunity to assert himself as the heir to the number one position.

Where Allen was coy, new GM Reggie McKenzie put it all the way out there that they are looking for him to live up to his potential promise.

He was firm in his response to the question if Pryor can be the number two guy.

“Absolutely. Yep. Hopefully our quarterback coach and offensive coordinator, the staff, can work [with] him, [to] see if we can get him rolling. It’s going to be a constant evaluation. But they need to find out how good he is and how good he can be.

That’s his goal right there and that’s the goal that the coaches are going to try to get him going.

Yeah, I think that’s a natural progression, absolutely. They need to know what he is, how he can throw the ball, how he picks it up and get him on the field.

As we discuss the incoming QBs and their potential impact on the league, Pryor’s path to becoming a NFL starter is taking its next steps.

He came in decorated by controversy that he himself created and now let’s see if his future in silver and black was meant to be.
