The Legend Of Alex Smith & The San Francisco 49ers

ALEX SMITH! So many sports fans type his name in all caps last weekend on social media platform such as Twitter. In one unlikely playoff victory against the New Orleans Saints, Smith balled out of control and achieved folk hero status.

Alex Smith The Unlikely Hero

If he has a repeat performance this weekend, he will rise from hero to legend. It will become one of those situations that people tell their grandkids about.

Why is it all that? Because Alex Smith is a very unlikely hero that has been tagged with the word bust that is now surging perhaps to the Super Bowl.

The 49ers are not Alex Smith. They are a team that has at the urging of new coach Jim Harbaugh become the talented sum of it’s parts.

They have become what they should have been under the stewardship of Mike Singletary and Mike Nolan. They were built for greatness and now they are contending for it.

Their defense is a rock solid unit of soldiers that is prone to knocking people out with their physical play. They have an emerging set of wide outs that it seems like every week is making you say ‘what is that guy’s name?’

And then there is RB Frank Gore and TE Vernon Davis. They have kept this team semi-relevant during their recent period of mediocrity.

For them, this victory will solidify all of their proverbial blood, sweat and tears that they have given this program when they could have dialed it in.

This may be a new look for this team but what this game means to this group is far more than what many outside of the Bay Area seem to believe.

Once again they are the underdog, despite having defeated this Giants group earlier this season. Yes, I know the Giants had injuries.  Yes, I know the Giants have a knack for beating teams in the playoffs that beat them in the regular season.

But in this game the Giants are stepping into the turf not as the underdog but as the favorite and that has to sting the 49ers pretty hard.

Our playoff predictor has our official predictions. In this space it should be said, the legend of Alex Smith has room to grow even taller. Stay tuned….
