The New York Giants want Osi Umenyiora to “retire as a Giant.”

NEW YORK—Giants DE Osi Umenyiora has proclaimed that he’s somewhat in the dark as to what the Giants have in store for him.  He has put it out there that he wants a long term contract but that its really out of his hands.

The Giants don’t really handle their internal business in the street so it was no shock to see them make moves such as extending DE/OLB Mathias Kiwanuka.  It “seemed” like they were making their choice. It “seemed like” Osi was on the fast track to being traded during the NFL draft weekend.

Not only did that not happen but the Giants are singing a different tune.

At the draft, Giants GM Jerry Reese explained the team’s position.   “Osi has been offered an extension two years in a row now,’’ Reese said. “We’d still like to make it work.”

Who is telling the truth?

Do the Giants want him or is it that the Giants don’t want to pay him what he thinks he’s worth?

Many things mean many things to different people. Not showing him what he wants to see to Osi could qualify his statements that all boil down to it’s up to the team.

Reese did admit that the Giants did look into a trade during the draft.

“All options were explored with respect to that.  Our first choice is he’ll play for the Giants and retire as a Giant.’’

Umenyiora is a prized defensive end on a team that leans on that position to make the rest of its defense click.

Their pass rushing initiative sets it all up so depth at that position is not a luxury; it’s a necessity.  The trio of Justin Tuck, Umenyiora and Jason Pierre-Paul should be kept intact if the Giants are to repeat.

It’s how the Giants play football and it’s not going to change anytime soon.

This push and pull has been going on with Osi and the Giants for an extended period of time. Somebody needs to give soon or this will be a pesky issue that dominates the headlines going into the spring and summer activities.
